Istoriškai susiformavo šie pradinio skaitymo metodai: 1) raidžių sudedamasis metodas (jo atsisakyta kaip sunkaus); 2) skiemenų metodas (iš dalies ir dabar naudojamas); 3) ištisų žodžių skaitymo metodas (naudojamas mokant anglų kalbos dėl žodžių trumpumo ir tarimo ypatybių); 4) garsiniai metodai (sintetinis, analitinis, analitinis-sintetinis). Skaityti taip pat mokoma aiškinamuoju skaitymo metodu, literatūrinio skaitymo, darbo su knyga metodais.
